BP-Y14L v7 Kit — Build Your Own High-Capacity USB-C Battery for Yaesu

Everything you need. Some soldering required.

The BP-Y14L Kit includes all the components to build a 5,000mAh (36Wh) extended-life battery pack for your Yaesu FT-1D, FT-2D, FT-3D, FT-5D, or VX-8. Same specs as the assembled BP-Y14L — you just put it together yourself.

This is an advanced DIY kit. Assembly requires soldering, wiring, and careful component placement. If you're not comfortable with intricate builds, buy the pre-assembled BP-Y14L instead.

What's Included:

  • (1) BP-Y14L v7 shell (ASA, available in Black or Orange)
  • (2) Samsung 50E 21700 cells
  • (1) BMS protection board
  • (1) USB-C charging module (15W, PPS support)
  • (1) HT contact PCB
  • Required wiring
  • Nickel Strip

Finished Battery Specs:

  • Capacity: 5,000mAh / 36Wh (2.3× stock Yaesu 2,200mAh battery)
  • Charging: USB-C, 15W with PPS support
  • Charge Time: Under 3 hours typical, under 4 hours max
  • Runtime: Up to 34 hours (standby with APRS enabled)
  • Protection: Built-in BMS — overcharge, over-discharge, and short-circuit protection
  • Housing: 3D-printed ASA (heat-resistant, UV-stable, textured grip)
  • User-serviceable — cells can be replaced when they eventually degrade
  • Weight: 6.5 oz
  • Thickness: 24mm
  • Warranty: 1 year (damage from improper assembly is not covered)

Assembly Difficulty: Advanced

This kit requires soldering to small pads, handling delicate wiring, and correct battery cell orientation. The contact block has been updated from nickel strips to a simplified PCB — PCB indicates how to solder.

Note: The assembly instructions and video have not yet been updated to reflect the new PCB contact block. The process is the same concept — the video is still useful as a reference.

Desk Cradle:

FAQ:

Q: Should I buy the kit or the assembled version?
A: If you have solid soldering skills and enjoy building, the kit saves you money and gives you a fun project. If you're unsure, buy the assembled version — multiple reviewers who built the kit recommend it.

Q: What tools do I need?
A: A quality soldering iron with a fine tip, solder, wire strippers, and patience. A clumsy iron won't cut it on this build.

Q: Can I replace the cells later?
A: Yes. The BP-Y14L is user-serviceable. The Samsung 50E 21700 cells can be swapped when needed.

Q: The instructions don't match the new PCB. What do I do?
A: The contact block was updated from nickel strips to a PCB. The soldering concept is the same — PCB indicates how to solder. Updated instructions are coming.
